Chicago Travel: Best Tours Cupcake Tour

When Chris got a surprise day off on Saturday, I wanted to do something fun to help him relax. We had purchased a Groupon for the Best Tours Cupcake Tour for our anniversary, but since we can’t usually book in advance, the tour was full every time we could go. We were so excited when we saw there was space available last minute for Saturday.

Our tour guide for the tour was Seth, and he really made it a great experience. Not only did he have interesting facts about each bakery we visited, but he also told us about the buildings we passed on the way. Plus, he really got to know each person on our tour and had a great sense of humor (he even performs stand-up comedy around Chicago).

The tour took two hours and included five stops. Of course we picked the first truly cold day since we moved here to do the tour—it was in the low 50s with 40 mph winds. Full disclosure: I was feeling terrible, so my photos aren’t the best. I hope they still give y’all a feel for the tour.

Our first stop was West Town Bakery, a fun spot in River North that uses only organic and all-natural ingredients. I tried a delicious red velvet cupcake while Chris had the vegan chocolate chocolate cupcake. He said it was really good and didn’t taste vegan at all.

Next, we headed to the Water Tower Place, a popular mall on Michigan Ave. There we stopped at Sacred Ground Bakery and CafĂ© for the largest cupcake on our tour. I went with a vanilla cupcake, which had some of the best icing I’ve ever had, and Chris loved the carrot cake cupcake.

Our third stop was L’Appetito…for gelato. It was strange to get gelato on a cupcake tour, but I got the limone gelato and used it as a frozen lemonade since all the sweet cupcakes were making me thirsty. Chris decided to be a basic girl and went with the pumpkin gelato. Honestly, we have had better gelato in town and wouldn’t go back, but it was still a good stop.

You can’t do a cupcake tour without heading to Sprinkles, so that was our fourth stop. Chris and I both had the red velvet cupcake. Even though the store itself is tiny, the cupcake ATM machine out front is a fun alternative.

The tour really saved the best for last with our visit to More Cupcakes. At that point, I was way too full to eat another bite, so they packed up the mini cupcakes for me to try at home. We tried the salted caramel, which was the best cupcake we had all day. The cupcake was so moist with a delicious caramel center. We also tried the BLT cupcake, which is a savory cupcake that consists of a bacon biscuit with ranch dressing and a tomato on top. I wasn’t keen on trying it, but it was surprisingly delicious! Even though More Cupcakes is far from us, I’m sure we’ll head there again as soon as possible.

  12. I've never even heard of a cupcake tour but what a cute idea especially with mini cupcakes because it would be hard to do full size. The last one looks amazing! Is that the salted caramel? The caramel center sounds so different and clearly I'm a big fan of caramel.
