Guest Post: From High Street to Main Street: Styling Basics for Any Occasion

Hi, friends! I'm off exploring Colorado with my love, but I've got a great guest photo for you today! I decided not to ask for guest posts this time (this one happened to be already in the works), so I'll be taking a few days off from the blog. I'll be back on Monday with my quick thoughts about our trip! If you want to follow along with us on our trip, check my Instagram (thesiberianamerican) or SnapChat (SiberianOlya).

We’ve all had those days. You have to be up at dawn for work or school, a million things need to get done, and on top of that, you’ve committed to plans that evening when you know you’ll be fantasizing about a pint of Cherry Garcia, fleece-lined sweatpants, and Season 2 of Scandal waiting for you on your Netflix queue. On that day, which will, of course, be flourished with freezing rain and an overcast sky, the last thing you may want to think about is how to look cute. So, you drag yourself out of bed and take a long, hard look at your closet. What sartorial battle armor do you choose to get you through the next 18 hours? To get you through any flurry of activity where the logistics of styling need to take a seat, let’s go over some tips and tricks that can transform your look for any occasion no matter what you’re wearing.

One Piece From Day to Evening

Whether you’re shopping from a brick & mortar or online dress boutique, you should always look for a single, defining high-quality dress that can be your go-to for anything from a 9 a.m. boardroom meeting, drinks with the girls after work, or even a six-hour flight. Opt for something in a classic, figure-flattering cut that ends just above the knee like a classic A-line, or even a wrap dress. Whatever you choose, think about how it’ll play well with the rest of your wardrobe. Layer a blazer or cardigan over it during the day, and style with a leather jacket, or an on-trend bomber for a fun night out.

Keep Your Colors Simple

Part of wearing a great, low-maintenance outfit for a number of occasions and settings is keeping your colors in check. You don’t need to buy an all-black wardrobe like some chic fashion ninja, but one aspect that can allow your basics to pull double duty from day to evening is their color. If you’re old enough to recall when Sharon Stone famously wore a charcoal grey Gap turtleneck to the 1996 Oscars, then you can see that even the most basic of basics can be styled to suit any affair. While you may not be going to a star-studded award show tonight, let’s say that you do have a turtleneck or basic top in one of your drawers. Pair it with a sleek, tailored jacket in a complementary tone, like a seasonal jewel tone like emerald green, ruby red, or inky blue, and you’ll have yourself a chic, menswear-inspired minimalist look that works at all hours of the day.

That Day to Night Glow Up

Going back to our example of a classic, signature dress, you can easily go from day to night with some distinct accessorizing and make-up magic. Let’s say you wear your LBD or favorite wrap dress to work and you’ve styled it appropriately with a blazer or cardigan for professional meetings. You can accessorize for crisp functionality with a stylish wristwatch, minimal bangles, more subdued neckwear, or earrings, and finish off your look with just some BB cream, concealer, and light eye makeup. Fast forward to happy hour and switch out those flats for some cute, complementary wedges or heels and much more expressive jewelry and makeup. Consider a smokey eye, a darker lip color, and some dry shampoo that can give your hair that fresh salon look even if you’ve just been sitting at your desk all day. For more inspiration on day to night transformations, InStyle has some great tips as well.

Always Be Ready

Whether you’re a staunch minimalist or you’re shouting that you have nothing to wear from under a pile of basic tees and tops, there’s something to be said about having a unique look that can take you from day to evening and from work to play with minimal effort. Whether you’re working overtime or taking care of kids or any other obligations, it’s totally possible to take something as simple as a plain white tee and turn it into a statement look with some fashion-forward twists and tips. But, above all else, remember that styling yourself should be as fun as it is flattering. Choose pieces and craft looks that draw out your best features and put a smile on your face and remember that confidence is always in style!

Thanksgiving Fashion Inspired by Happiness Boutique

Companies with social initiatives are my favorite. There’s nothing better than buying something and feeling like you contributed to a great initiative. When Happiness Boutique contacted me for a collaboration, and I discovered that not only do they sell gorgeous jewelry, but their social initiative is to spread happiness, I couldn’t say yes fast enough!

I love how jewelry can completely transform your outfit. When I searched through Happiness Boutique’s extensive inventory, I was on the hunt for two statement necklaces for the fall: one to wear with casual outfits and another one for going out. It was seriously so hard to narrow my choices down to two when there were so many gorgeous pieces. I even asked Chris for help! With the two necklaces I picked out, I put together three looks perfect for Thanksgiving.

Casual Thanksgiving
I love putting together casual outfits and dressing them up with a fun necklace. For a casual Thanksgiving, I picked out this gorgeous honeybee statement necklace.

I love how it looks with my mustard boatneck tee from Loft (currently on sale!) and my Old Navy Rockstar skinny jeans in glorious pine. I was a little worried because the necklace felt heavy when I first picked it up, but I didn’t feel it at all when I put it on!

Formal Thanksgiving
Russian parties are always on the formal side, so I wanted a sparkly necklace to go with the dress I picked out for this year’s Russian thanksgiving. Since my houndstooth dress (similar) is a little busy, I went with the vintage jewels statement necklace.

I love how the necklace brings a little sparkle without clashing with the dress.

Casual Thanksgiving with a Formal Twist
Thanksgiving at my in-laws’ house is the complete opposite of our Russian Thanksgiving. They prefer all things casual, and there’s definitely nothing wrong with that! One of my favorite things to do is to pair a fancy necklace with a casual outfit.

I love how my dainty statement necklace looks with the rust-colored top from H&M (sold out) and olive green pants from JCPenney.

Happiness Boutique is based in Germany, but it offers free shipping worldwide. I was impressed by the quality of the necklaces, and I love that they have a customer reward program (who doesn’t like earning free stuff?). If you want a gorgeous necklace of your own, Happiness Boutique is currently offering my readers 10 percent off with the code thesiberianamerican.

I received two complimentary necklaces from Happiness Boutique, but all opinions are my own.

Friday Favorites: Five Dresses Perfect for Spring

Chicago has not gotten the memo it’s spring with more snow yesterday morning, so I’m left dreaming of spring weather and my favorite thing ever: dresses. At any given time, I have a browser open with a dress I love. I don’t buy them all because I already have more dresses than more women probably have in their lifetimes, but I’m always dreaming. Here are five options on my radar right now.

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you click on a link, I receive a teeny tiny commission.

One.
When I was in sixth grade, my mom forced me to diversify my wardrobe because all I would let her buy me was stripes. Not much has changed. I love this blue stripe jersey dress from Old Navy. It looks so comfy, and the color is perfect for spring.
Two.
I always get weird looks when I mention JCPenney dresses, but I think their dresses are nice quality at a great price point. I have a new favorite JCPenney dress practically every week. Here is my new favorite for this week:
Three.
Isn’t this dress perfect for a spring wedding? I’m obsessed with the pink!
Four.
Fun fact: Chris usually likes the clothes I pick out, but he hates lace. I feel a sense of accomplishment whenever I pick out a lace dress he actually likes. My current favorite is the light blue version of this dress.
Five.
A plaid dress in spring colors? Yes, please!

What is your favorite dress from my list?

Hope y'all have a wonderful weekend!

Winter to Spring Transition Picks

It has been in the 60s in Chicago for the past few days, so I have decided to believe that spring has arrived. Today, I thought it would be fun to share what’s on my wish list as I transition from winter to spring.

Flower scarf
Some days are still cold enough where I want to wear a scarf, especially with the wind. I love this floral scarf for a fun pop of color.

Neutral Cardigan
I love wearing cardigans during this time of year. I really love the mushroom color of this cardigan and think it would be a great addition to my wardrobe.

A lace dress
Y’all know how I feel about dresses, and I need this one in my life. Mint and lace? Yes, please! Since Easter is early this year, I'm including this in my winter to spring picks.
Colorful pants
These are basically on my wish list in different colors for different seasons. This winter I’ve been wearing eggplant and cranberry skinny jeans, and now I’m wanting these fun pink ankle pants.
A spring bag
Other than neutral colors, I don’t have a bag for spring. I’ve been really wanting a mint or light blue Kate Spade bag, but it’s out of the budget right now. One day!

Friday Favorites: Mad About Plaid

Happy Friday! Like most of you ladies, I have been obsessed with plaid this season, so today I wanted to share some of my favorite buys and some items I really want.

/ / One
I love this Old Navy plaid shirt. There are lots of great color options, and it doesn’t have a super baggy fit (which happens to me a lot with plaid tops). I love that it is super lightweight, but it still keeps me warm.
/ / Two
This is my favorite plaid top for fall. It’s cheap but great quality, and the colors are so pretty. I wear it any chance I get.
/ / Three
I love this plaid infinity scarf from BP. The colors are perfect and work well with my navy North Face jacket.
/ / Four
How gorgeous is this plaid tunic? I would love wearing it with leggings on a cold day.
/ / Five
I never thought I would want plaid pants, but these are so pretty. I love that the plaid is subtle, but you can tell it’s there. I would love to wear these pants if I go back to work in an office.

What plaid items have you purchased recently?

Friday Favorites: Five Cardigans I Love for Fall

Happy Friday, friends! Today is a great day because by the time most of y’all are reading this, my best friend will be in town to spend the long weekend with me. I’m so excited to show her around Chicago.

With the constant weather changes this time of year, cardigans are my favorite way to layer. I might have quite a few in my closet, but I constantly find more I want to buy. Instead of buying them, I thought I would share them with y’all instead.

The price of this cardigan is a little high for me, but doesn’t it look cozy? I love anything that makes me feel like I am wrapped up in a blanket.

/ / Two

One of the cardigan colors I am missing is burgundy, so I love this cozy option from Loft. I can't decide if I love the burgundy or the gray color more.

/ / Three
I know I’m not the only one obsessed with stripes this season, and this striped cardigan is adorable.

/ / Four
This plaid cardigan makes me happy. I can think of so many fun outfits with it!

/ / Five
I love mustard and have been searching for a cute mustard cardigan. I think I need this one from Target in my life!

Wish List: Summer to Fall Transition Picks

Note: This post contains affiliate links. If you click on a link, I receive a teeny tiny commission.

I love the time of year when you can feel fall slowly pushing summer aside. In Chicago, this has happened sooner than in Texas with day to day temperatures fluctuating from the high 80s to the low 70s. It’s so fun to mix summer pieces with fall staples. Here are the items I have my eye on this time of year:

Summer to Fall

Loft Chambray Tunic Softened Shirt: I love the idea of continuing the chambray trend into the fall with a darker look. This chambray shirt from Loft is high on my to-buy list.

Loft Stitchy Boatneck Sweater: When I lived in Texas, I was always so excited to wear my first sweater of the season. This sweater is an open weave, so it is perfect as a transition piece.

Banana Republic Layered Silk Top: I love everything about this top. It is light enough that it can be worn in September, but the maroon color screams fall.

BP Plaid Scarf: I love fun, light scarves as a way to transition from summer to fall. Bonus points if the scarf is plaid.

Michael Kors 'Large Jet Set' Snap Pocket Tote (Merlot): Merlot is my favorite color purse for this fall, and I love the idea of wearing a fall bag with my summer to fall transition pieces.

Caslon® 'Collegiate' V-Neck Cardigan: I love layering and have about a million cardigans, but this one would be a great addition to my collection.

Loft Mixprint Shirtdress: I can’t have a wish list without including a dress. This shirt dress is light enough for September, but the pattern is perfect for fall.

What is on your wish list this time of year?

What to Wear: New Year’s Eve Dresses

I mentioned yesterday that New Year’s Eve is a huge holiday for Russians, and we love to celebrate in style. For me, New Year’s Eve is all about taking risks and wearing dresses I wouldn’t normally wear. Today I wanted to share some of my favorite dress options for New Year’s Eve.

Casual
If you’re going somewhere where a fancy dress would be out of place, you can still have fun with your outfit. I love bright colors and fun patterns for New Year’s Eve.
Lace
I love wearing lace in the winter, especially for special occasions. New Year’s Eve lace dresses can be both fun and classy.
Metallic
If you don’t want to go full-on sequins for New Year’s Eve, metallic dresses are a great choice. These dresses sparkle but are usually more subtle than sequin dresses.
Sequins
Sequin dresses are my favorite choice for New Year’s Eve. This year, I have been leaning towards navy sequins, but I am also considering black and gold options.
Where are you celebrating New Year’s Eve this year? What are you planning on wearing?
