Let’s Have a Coffee Date: Babies Sleep Eventually…Right?

Hey, friends! I know I say it every time I show up on here, but I sure do miss blogging regularly. We’re still seriously really struggling in the sleep department (more on that in a minute), and I don’t see myself being able to blog the way I used to until things turn around, but I do hope to hop on here every once in a while and give y’all some life updates!

The biggest news I have is that we’re moving. Again. Writing that makes me a little nauseous, but our apartment increased our price by a huge amount (don’t even get me started on how they are now leasing our apartment for $350 less a month than they wanted to charge us), and we started looking into other options. We are actually moving into a townhouse that’s bigger for quite a bit less money and much closer to my family. It’s the right decision in the long run, but the idea of packing again (with a baby this time!) makes me want to cry. In case you’re curious, this is move number eight for Chris and me since we got married. We’ve been married eight years. We can’t buy a house yet because we have to go through Match again for fellowship in two years.

We’re coming off another really difficult schedule for Chris (two full weeks of nights), but the next two weeks should be a little easier. We’re hoping to enjoy some family time because the four weeks after that will be a super crazy schedule. We haven’t had much time together since Anthony was born, so we really try to take advantage of it when we can.

I think I mentioned in the past that Chris has a four-week long workshop in DC he has to do during this next medical year (the medical new year is in July). We just found out our dates are likely early September through early October. It’s a great time of the year to go, but I am a bit nervous about spending four weeks away from home with an 11-month old! I’ve actually never been to DC, though, so I’m looking forward to getting to explore!

Alright, let’s talk a bit about sleep. I want to start off by saying Anthony is really such a great, happy baby, and I’m not sharing this to complain. I just mostly want to document how crazy this last month has been when it comes to sleep. Anthony has never been a great sleeper. When he was a newborn he had his days and nights mixed up and was cluster feeding. The best stretch he has ever given us was a little over five hours, and that has only happened a few times. Now that he has hit the four-month sleep regression, though, it has been crazy. There are days he wakes up as soon as I put him down, and we do that constantly all night. He stopped wanting his pacifier because he associates it with sleeping. He’s always been a good napper, but now he starts crying as soon as he realizes I’m trying to put him down for a nap. I’m really hoping this is just a phase (though sleep has been bad for six weeks, so it’s hard to believe that sometimes), and that in the next update I can share how great he is sleeping! During the times in between naps and before bedtime, we have so much fun, so I’m hoping sleep will get there, too.

We’ve been all about quick meals lately, and one of my favorites is this cabbage and beef stir fry. I’ve wanted to try it for years, but Chris thought cooked cabbage sounded gross. I finally got him to try it, and he loved it! I thought I would share it in case you are also looking for a quick meal. We do use almost twice the amount of ground beef she suggests.

  1. Oh no sorry to hear that you are moving again. That is crazy how much they increased you rent. But I think you will be very happy living in a townhouse. My friend lives in one and loves it.

  2. Oh friend, you are a champ. I'm so sorry that you guys are having to move again (I can't imagine moving with a baby!), but I am glad that in the long run it will be a better spot for your family. But still - the move! Yikes! And the lack of sleep is so hard already without a difficult work schedule thrown in the mix. Seriously, you are awesome for being able to function at all! I hope as he leaves the four month sleep regression he will figure out the sleeping thing! It's just so hard on everyone when they don't sleep. You are doing so great, though!

Oh, and thanks for the cabbage and beef recipe! I'm checking it out right now. That sounds like it might be right up our alley. :)

  3. I hope that the move goes slowly & that Anthony starts sleeping better soon!

  4. I hope that Anthony starts to sleep a little bit better! The lack of sleep is so hard on you but also him too I’m sure! But he’s seriously so adorable, and that’s great that he’s such a happy camper during the day! And that sucks that y’all are needing to move again! We moved a few ears ago and I hated it and told Chris that I never wanted to do it again. At least the new place will be close to family!

  5. Anthony is just so so so cute! (Obviously babies were made to be cute since they can be kind of frustrating!) I hope he starts sleeping for you soon!!
A few weeks in DC sounds lovely! I hope you guys have a great time! I hope the next two weeks are also super relaxing and slow for you guys!
Another move sounds so rough, but at least it's a move upward! Bigger house, less money, closer to family!!

  6. I LOVE DC! I was only about an hour from DC when I lived in MD and loved visiting! You'll have a great time! I'm sorry Anthony isn't sleeping, and it hope it gets better for you soon!

  7. Anthony is such a cutie!!! I am so sorry you guys are struggling with sleep. I remember all too well how it felt to not be sleeping and running on empty. It will get better mama, hang in there!!! Moving is the worst, but it sounds like you will be in a better situation. I wish you the best with the move!

  8. Oh my gosh, I just wanna snuggle with that lil guy! Such a lil cutie. :)

Ugh, move number eight - blah! That is no fun whatsoever but it'll be nice to be closer to family & such.

  9. Oh goodness! I know how stressful moving is and with a baby makes it harder. I hope you get a lot of help so you don't have to do a lot of heavy lifting. Anthony is such a cute boy and seems very aware. Sorry to hear he doesn't like to sleep for long. Seems like he wants to be awake and have fun all the time which makes for a very exhausted Momma! I hope you get some rest this weekend! xo Emily @ Martinis & Bikinis

  10. That is so stressful, but hopefully having more room is helpful and worth it!

  11. So glad to hear from you! I know you miss this space as I've missed mine too lately.

I hate that you guys have to move again! I hope you can stay in that townhome for the rest of your time before his next match. And about DC...that's exciting! You know it's only 2 hours from meeeee...road trip?! Richmond is pretty awesome too... just saying!

I hope Anthony starts sleeping a little better for you soon! This time seems never-ending but hopefully you'll look back on it as though it flew by. I would definitely be complaining if I wasn't getting any decent sleep!

  12. Ugh, I hate when apartments do that! Our last one did it and we moved too. So annoying!

  13. TBH I'm glad that you found something!! Everything I hear about the housing market is crazy. A lot of my folks are looking to buy because the rents are stupid ridiculous. I think it's crap that they won't offer you the lower rate though. It will be nice to be closer to family though - and to have more space as Anthony becomes more mobile. ;) A short term stint in DC will be awesome!!

  14. He will sleep girl! And I can say that because I know right now you feel like is this EVER going to happen. But just out of no where my little guy went from wake up every 4-5 hours to sleeping 12+ hours. Alright kid. You do you. It'll happen. But in the mean time.... more coffee?

    1. Yep, basically feel like I'm never getting sleep again. Haha. Glad to hear yours randomly started sleeping a ton! I'm all about the coffee these days. :)
