Life Update: We Moved (Again)!

I must admit it kinda cracks me up that I have had this blog for almost three years, and in that time we have moved three times. As I mentioned a few months ago, I really didn’t want to move again. I liked our apartment (even though it was on the smaller side), and I especially loved our location. The plan was to stay if our rent didn’t go up by too much. I was so excited when we found out they weren’t going to raise our rent at all…until we got an offer we couldn’t refuse on a larger unit in the same complex.

That’s how we ended up moving less than a year from our move back to Texas from Chicago. I was super stressed because we couldn’t see our unit or a model in advance, so the only thing I had to go on was the floor plan. There were some things that were different that I didn’t really expect. Our wood floors are light and our kitchen cabinets are dark, which is the opposite of our old apartment. Also, both bathrooms have really ugly red countertops, which was really surprising. Obviously neither one of those things is a huge deal, though, especially when it comes to how much more space we have in this unit.

The move itself went so much better than I expected. Of course, the movers were over three hours late, but it actually worked out OK because we were able to move lots of clothes and boxes using luggage racks provided by the apartment complex. I’m so thankful for Chris’s parents, who helped us out so much. The move would have been a million times harder without them. I questioned Chris’s Match Day results quite a few times when we first got them, but I must say God has truly answered my questions over and over. I never imagined how much we would need to be home over the last year, and I am so grateful for the help and support of our families. (My parents would have been happy to help us move as well, but since this was a last-minute move, they happened to be on a three-week trip to Europe).

I’m glad I am writing this post a little removed from the actual move because I would have still sounded frantic and overwhelmed this time last week. I just hate living in a sea of boxes. Thankfully, Chris and I have been able to get so much done, so I am feeling much better. At this point, our focus is more on organizing than unpacking because we don’t have very many boxes left.

I’m hopeful we can stay in our new place for over a year, but we will have to see. On July 1, we will have three years left in this area (Chris might do fellowship here, but a lot of the fellowships he is looking at go through the Match, so we will have to see). I either want to stay or find a house rental that will let us sign a two-year contract. I’m trying not to get too ahead of myself, though, and enjoy the time we do have here!

  3. Glad your move went well! And I agree that it's nicer your new place is bigger and to not be so worried about less attractive parts of it.

  4. Glad the move went smoother than expected and now you have a bigger space but it's crazy you couldn't view the unit ahead of time. I would have loved to see the look on your face when you saw the red countertops. LOL!

  6. wow, red countertops! that's so weird that they couldn't even show you photos or anything. the extra space is amazing, and i'm glad the move went so well. seriously, if i had posted whilst moving/doing all the stuff, it would have been a mess as well. heck, it still is a mess. moving is so hectic no matter what.

  8. Moving seriously is so tough, so I'm glad that yours went relatively smoothly! I swear that when we moved into our house a couple of years ago we were so focused on unpacking and not organizing, which means that we have a lot of organizing still to do. So you're definitely doing the smart thing!

  11. i can understand not wanting to live in a sea of boxes. my family moved around a LOT when i was younger; at some point i guess i started to prefer the impermanence or something, because it's rare that i stay in one place for too long. in the four years i'd lived in san antonio, for example, i'd lived in four different apartments, and two of those were in the same complex. so yeah, moving from one apartment to another but basically staying in the same place, i understand how that can be frustrating.

where in texas did yall live?

  12. Ugh moving is the worst! Glad it went smooth and you're getting resettled! If the countertops bother you, try contact paper! I saw a great hack for covering rental counter tops, no damage. ;)

  13. I'm glad that the move went well. Red counter tops?? That was a surprising read. I wonder who picked that ha. Hopefully you're able to stay! I've lived in 3 different places in the not quite 2 years that I've lived in DFW. I'm kind of hoping to not do so again for awhile.

  14. How dare your parents tour around Europe! ;) Lol. But really, congratulations on a successful move!! (And for finding some peace in Match Day's outcome!) I'm glad things are a little less hectic and a little less cramped for you :)

  15. I'm so happy to hear that your move was a success! That's also great that your landlord wasn't going to raise to your rent but even better that you have the opportunity for a bigger unit. Things have a funny way of working themselves out. Enjoy your time in your new space. Beautifully Candid
