Confessions: Our Move to Chicago

I’m not sure where the time went (how has it been six weeks since Match Day?), but our move to Chicago is getting uncomfortably close. I thought it’s about time I confess some things to y’all, so let’s get started, shall we?

I confess:

Part of me is still in denial about this move. We’ve been talking about for so long that it’s hard to believe it’s almost time to actually move. It’s starting to feel more like reality now that we have boxes all over the place.

I am having trouble deciding what to leave here for the year and what to take with us. I just don’t want to get there and have to buy something we already own. Christopher’s solution is just to bring everything with us, but I shot that down pretty quickly.

I am so sad to leave my job. I know so many people who don’t love where they work, so I am heartbroken to leave a place I love.

I am starting to get worried about getting everything done in time to move. My last day of work is on a Friday…and we leave early in the morning that Saturday. I basically have three weekends left to get ready, not to mention celebrating medical school graduation and seeing as many friends as we can.

I am a tiny bit nervous about cooking with a gas stove. I have always had an electric stove, so I have this irrational fear that I am going to light something on fire.

  4. I can imagine how anxious all of this makes you! We'll be moving in August as well and I'm also in denial. Three months are going to fly and then it will be very real!

  5. I'm sorry you're leaving such a great job, and can't imagine how hard that'll be. We picked up and moved from Connecticut to Florida about 5 years ago, and it was definitely scary but I am so glad we did and can't imagine our lives if we hadn't.

Good luck with the move and hoping you find an even more rewarding job there ;-)

  6. When we made our move from Louisiana to Connecticut, we only took what could fit in our cars. It was cheaper to sell what we didn't want and buy new furniture once we got there than it would have been to rent a Uhaul and have it come with us, especially for such a temporary move. Maybe that can help you decide on what to bring! Just think if it's worth paying to bring or not! Best of luck to y'all. I hope you get settled in quickly and find a new job you love!

  7. It's too bad you couldn't work something out with your job to work from home for a year. Maybe it's too late now to ask..but it couldn't hurt? And I know you are aching about this move, but I am still cheering you on (along with all the rest of your readers). We'll be here for you along the way, and please keep us updated! P.S. Gas stoves are THE BEST!! I grew up with one at home and the electric versions I've had to use since moving away just do NOT work as well. You'll convert, don't worry.

  8. Sucks that you have to leave a job you love! I hope you find an awesome one in Chicago! I know moving to a new place can be so hard, but I'm sure you will do great and be loving your new home before you know it! :)

  9. Moving is hard. Especially when you are leaving behind things you love. I went through these same fears too when we moved where we are now. Trust me you are going to love the gas stove. I don't have one now and I miss it so much!

  10. Oh, I wouldn't want to have to make that decision on what to take and what to keep!! Good luck!

  11. You know, I have the same fear about gas stoves, they freak me out! I'm afraid that not only will I light something on fire but that I'll somehow cause an explosion...like, action movie explosion from using one. So, needless to say, I will never be purchasing a gas stove. Ha, ha!

  12. Gas stoves are fantastic. After a year of cooking with gas, you will be so bummed to go back to electric!

I'm sorry this move is hard on you. But I think once you get there and get settled, you'll really love it!

  13. I would definitely bring any warm clothes you have. It may be summer and nice now but Chicago in the winter with the lake winds gets COLD.

  14. Moving is hard but you'll get through it! It always works out the way it should, and soon you'll be thriving in a new city. Buy a big box of baking soda, it will put out any fire that may go awry with a gas stove, without causing as huge of a mess as a fire extinguisher!

  15. I'm sorry, I can imagine it's tough to pack up your life and move away. But I'm sure there is plenty to look forward to in your future! :)

  16. So glad you're okay. I had something similar happen last year and we had to hide in the bathroom. It was SO scary!

  17. The year there will fly by and you'll be home before you know it. But so sorry you are struggling. Moving is hard! I'll be in Chicago last weekend in June for an MS event!!!!
